How I Solo Over “Are You In Love”

What Scales Do I Use in My Solo on “Are You In Love”?

A lot of students ask me about the ballad Are You In Love — the tune I recorded with Montis, Goudsmit & Directie. You might’ve come across it on YouTube or Spotify, or in one of the videos I’ve posted before.

In this post, I want to walk you through how I approach the solo in that song — especially what scales I use and how I think about the harmony.

The chord progression includes Fmaj7, Dm7, Gm7, Gm9, Gm11, C7sus4, A7/C#, Bm7♭5, Em7♭5, A7, G7, and Bbmaj7. That might sound like a lot, but the trick is not to overplay. In a ballad like this, it’s all about space, phrasing, and letting the harmony guide the melody.

I demonstrate a few of the scale choices I use in the solo, and I explain how I move through the changes in a way that feels musical, not technical.
